A New Social Media Campaign
Recognizing LGBT+ experiences of domestic abuse is the first step to creating change. #LGBTBeyondRecognition
To coincide with the 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence, Galop’s National LGBT+ Domestic Abuse Project is launching a national social media campaign. The #LGBTBeyondRecognition campaign will launch on November 23rd, 2020, and run until December 11th, 2020.
The campaign will deliver four key messages to LGBT+ survivors, community, and professionals:
- Recognizing LGBT+ experiences of abuse is the first step to creating change.
- Help is available.
- Whether others recognize it or not, your experience is valid.
- You have the power to help LGBT+ people in your life.
To deliver these messages, we are sharing new resources, videos, podcasts, and graphics. This content will educate on LGBT+ specific forms of abuse, challenge myths and stereotypes which minimize LGBT+ survivor experiences, and highlight specialist support available to LGBT+ survivors of domestic abuse.
By following this campaign, our hope is that people will be able to go beyond recognition to know where they can access support, how to share with their communities, and how to reduce LGBT+ barriers to inclusion.
The campaign launches with a new survivor story zine ‘Recognisable’ on November 23rd, 2020. ‘Recognisable’ will share the story of Neo; a non-binary person who is trying to cope with changes in their relationship. Their story was created from multiple experiences of real LGBT+ survivors of domestic abuse from across the United Kingdom.
Galop will also be hosting a live 90-minute webinar on December 3rd, 2020 at 1:30 pm. Our hope for this discussion is to highlight how Covid-19 is changing the landscape of domestic abuse and how this has affected survivors from multiple communities. LGBT+ experiences of domestic abuse are often rendered invisible by limited ideas of what constitutes abuse or who survivors are. If LGBT+ survivor experiences go unrecognized then that is ultimately the end of the story. This campaign will challenge the violence of invisibility felt by many LGBT+ survivors and improve recognition of their distinct experiences of abuse.
