At some point in our lives, all of us experience some form of hate.
Maybe at school, or in the workplace. In a public space, or online. The hatred might come from an individual, or a group. From a stranger, or someone you know.
Hate tells us that we’re not enough, or that we’re too much. It tells us there’s something wrong with us, and to hide who we are. It tells us to be ashamed. It makes us feel alone and powerless.
Hate hurts. It’s damaging. And sometimes, it can be deadly.
Oppressive beliefs about gender and sexuality set impossible standards which are damaging to everyone. They dictate how we’re meant to behave, how we’re meant to look, what we can and can’t wear, and what we can and can’t do. They tell us who we can and can’t be, and who we’re allowed to love.
And anyone who doesn’t meet these expectations could be a target for hate and abuse.
But the rising hate against LGBT+ people isn’t inevitable.
We can challenge it, together.
